Technical Drawing in Photonics Spatial drawing (3D) in AutoCAD. Lesson 15 Spatial drawing (3D) in AutoCAD. Dr. Zsolt István Benkő TAMOP-4.1.1.C-12/1/KONV-2012-0005 project „Preparation of the concerned sectors for educational and R&D activities related to the Hungarian ELI project”

A few examples to make 3D solids… Lesson 15 A few examples to make 3D solids… Extruding A few examples to make 3D solids… Let us take our previous drawing. First the object should be converted into a region. A region is an area not only lines. It is like a metal plate with zero thickness. Click the button shown on the picture to activate the REGION command. Then select all the thick lines (the contour lines of the object). By pressing ENTER the lines are converted into regions. In this case there are 5 regions. To make the holes the inner circles should be subtracted from the main region. It is in the Modify menu, in the Solid Editing submenu. Select the region to be subtracted from and press ENTER. Select the inner circles and press ENTER. Now it is a plate with holes. With the Extrude command (see picture) the region can be given thickness. You have to select what to extrude and ENTER. The thickness must be given. Technical drawing in Photonics

Technical drawing in Photonics Lesson 15 It is a 3D solid now. To see this you may need to switch the 2D drawing mode into 3D modeling (arrow!). The view mode should be selected (e.g. conceptual). Click on the 3Dorbit button. In this mode the object may be rotated in 3D space. Technical drawing in Photonics

Technical drawing in Photonics Lesson 15 With the same method the other previous drawing can be extracted, too. Technical drawing in Photonics

Revolving Lesson 15 Technical drawing in Photonics Let us see an other method. Draw a closed line and convert into a region. A symmetry line also needs to be drawn. Choose the Revolve command. Select the object to be revolved. An axis may be specified or an already existing object may be used as an axis. The angle should be specified (360o in most cases). Revolving has been finished. The result is shown in x-ray view mode. Technical drawing in Photonics

Direct 3D modeling Lesson 15 Technical drawing in Photonics Switch to 3D modeling mode. A box can be drawn by giving the co-ordinates of the first corner, the lengths of the sides and then the height. A pyramid can be drawn directly by giving the co-ordinates of the first corner, the lengths of the sides and then the height. By changing the view it is much more visible. By using the 3D Rotate command the pyramid is rotated by 45o. The two objects can be united. The same body in x-ray view. Technical drawing in Photonics
