Learning Target: I can explain one economic, social and political reason settlers came to the New World. (write this on top of your note sheet) Homework: Go to our website, find Geography Notes and copy them in to your notebook. Don’t forget to highlight!

Discuss the following questions with your group. What countries do you think the first immigrants came from? Why do you think the first immigrants came to the New World? Give at least three reasons. Are they “push or pull” factors?

The Business of Colonization English colonies were funded and maintained by joint-stock companies. This allowed several investors to pool their money to support a colony to make a profit.

The Lost Colony of Roanoke 1587: England’s first attempt to establish a colony in North America. Captain John White sailed back to England for supplies. When he returned in 1590, the settlement was empty. Everyone had vanished. The word “CROATOAN” was carved into a tree.

The Lost Colony of Roanoke Explanations? Colonists starved, were attacked by Native Americans, or joined a local tribe. What do you think?

The Starving Time “There was no talk, no hope, no work, but dig gold, wash gold, refine gold, load gold” –John Smith Disease from contaminated river water. Harsh winter Famine Powhatan tribe killed livestock & destroyed farms.

The Starving Time Colonists ate roots, rats, snakes and boiled shoe leather. First execution in New World for a man who ate his dead wife! 60 out of 600 Colonists survived.

“Brown Gold” Tobacco became a highly profitable crop. To work their plantations, many owners imported indentured servants from England. In exchange for passage to North America, and food and shelter upon arrival, an indentured servant agreed to a limited term of servitude-usually 4-7 years.

MERCANTILISM "Mine, mine, mine" The “Old Country” allows their citizens to leave Europe and set up colonies in the “New World” because……. MERCANTILISM an economic policy designed to enhance the power and wealth of the mother countries by taking natural resources and wealth from the new lands.

Give and Take Relationship The colonists were allowed to come in exchange for the Mother Country taking the resources of the land. How long can this last?

Discuss with your group One way that the British government carried out the policy of Mercantilism was by…. 1. Promoting free trade between its colonies and Europe. 2. Prohibiting the transatlantic trade in enslaved Africans. 3. Encouraging the development of colonial manufacturing and trade. 4. Requiring that most colonial trade occur within the British Empire.
