Presentation transcript:

Experiment Aim: What are you studying? Sample: How many? Gender? Age? Sampling method? (opportunity) Apparatus: Where? When? Controls? Stooges? Presentation materials? Variables: Independent: Conditions created-What are you going to compare to what? Dependent: What are you going to measure and how are you going to measure it? Procedure: Step-by-step Data: Quantitative (numbers) or Qualitative (info)

Experiments Conducted 3B: Memory and gender by Rogelio’s group (lab experiment) Music and personality type by Zulema’s group. (Correlation) Positive and Negative Reinforcement by Nancy’s group. (lab experiment) Pattern repetition and congruence by Ellen’s group (lab experiment) 4B: Smell and taste by Joseph’s group. (Lab experiment) Friends vs strangers and collaboration by Heidy’s group (Lab experiment with observation) Music and memory by Moriah’s group (lab experiment) Instructional Method and Retention by Ciaran’s group (lab experiment)

Definitions Apparatus-an instrument, piece of equipment, used in an experiment for various purposes, such as delivering stimuli or measuring responses during an experiment. Independent Variable-affects the DV-Always more than one-Sometimes manipulated or changed. Dependent Variable-the outcome or what is measured in an experiment Operationalized-process of defining the measurement of something that is not directly measurable.

Control of Variables Situational Participant Standardisation Participant Counterbalancing Random Allocation Demand Characteristics vs Social Desirability Single Blind Test Investigator effects Double blind test Confounding Variables Controls

There is a difference between method and design. Experiment (Lab, Field, and Natural) Self report (Questionnaires and interviews) Observation Case Study Correlations Design: Independent Groups Repeated Measures Matched Pairs

Potential Issues to Discuss (Besides Variables) Ecological Validity Ethics Validity DR DICH Reliability Deception Right to Withdraw Usefulness Debriefing Generalizability Informed Consent Confidentiality Harm to well being

Types of experiments Lab: artificial environment Field: natural environment, but experimenter still manipulates IV while measuring DV. Natural: natural environment, and variables cannot be manipulated.
