Technology Survey Highlights Taylor ISD 2013-2014 Technology Survey Highlights

The Taylor ISD Technology department strives to provide students and staff with the best technology within our means to promote continuous school improvement and student success. Each school year we will conduct a technology survey to track our progress towards goals of the district. This survey will be used as part of a much broader technology plan. The following slides are the major highlights of the current survey with a few slides comparing progress from last year. Over 200 employees of Taylor ISD completed the 2013-2014 Technology Survey. -Click- 128 of the employees said they were classroom teachers. That would account for about 52% of the teachers in the district. 128 Teachers

Of those that completed the survey, most had been employed with the school district for 10+ years.

Most participants marked that they were secondary teachers. -Click- However, a close second were elementary teachers.

Satisfaction with technical support has improved since last year Agree or Strongly Agree 2013 2014 54% 73% When compared to the previous school year, 73% believed that technical support had improved. That is a 19% gain. Keep in mind staff and structure has changed. 19% gain

Notice the need for updated computers remained the top need and more computers passed more reliable wireless access. -Click-

The quantity and quality of the computers in my classroom meet the instructional needs of my students. Agree / Strongly Agree 39% The average teacher still believes they do not have the quantity or quality of computers their students need to be successful. -Click next 2 slides- 2013- 40%

The technicians serving my campus have been courteous and have cared about my trouble with technology. Agree / Strongly Agree 91% This is an increase of 11% over last school year. 2013- 80%

My technology work orders are completed correctly and in a timely manner. Agree / Strongly Agree 85% This is an increase of 18% over last school year. 2013- 67%

Hardware Teachers Use Most on a Daily Basis 2013 2014 Projector 75% 70% PC Desktop 61% Mac Laptop 56% 64% Document Camera 54% 48% iPad 45% 40% Those who responded to the survey were asked what hardware they use most on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. The top 5 responses are shared here. Example: 70% of teachers taking the survey said they use the projector more often than anything else on a daily basis.

Here are the top 5 responses from the last 2 years. Example: 35% of teachers taking the survey said their students use the PC desktops more often than anything else on a daily basis.

There is a growing trend that teachers want Macbook Laptops to replace their old computers. 27.6% expressed they would want to replace their old computers with Macbook laptops while 20 % said they did not need a replacement. (It’s quite likely these are the people that already have Macbooks) -Click-

About 32% of teachers want to replace their old student computers with Macbooks. -click- About 13% of teachers surveyed believed that what their students have now is fine.

Instructional Technology has improved since last year Agree / Strongly Agree 2013 2014 60% 64% Now on to INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY. 64% of those that responded to the survey said instructional technology has improved since last year. Keep in mind that the staff has not changed in those years.

Quantity and Quality of Instructional Technology training meets my needs Agree/ Strongly Agree 57% 57% of teachers responded that the QUANTITY and QUALITY of instructional technology training met their needs. This is an increase of 13% over last school year. 2013- 44%

Top software students or teachers use daily. 2013 2014 Word (71%) Word (67%) Outlook (58%) Outlook (64%) Excel (33%) Excel (39%) Powerpoint (27%) Powerpoint (25%) Cscope (23%) Forethought (16%) The survey listed over 25 programs we use in the district. Respondents listed these as the top 5 programs that either they and/or their students used on a daily basis. For example, 67% of respondents said that Microsoft Word was the #1 program they used on a daily basis.

We currently use Outlook, though at least 66% of staff would be fine with changing to Gmail.

Only 2 out of 128 teachers expressed they prefer students use Gaggle instead of Google. Over 82% of employees would be OK with changing to Google Apps for Education for students.

Preferred way to receive training Most surveyed prefer face-to-face training this year. The choose of combination of face-to-face and online was added. About 28% of those surveyed would prefer that method of instruction. 2014

Preferred time to receive training 2013 Most surveyed prefer after school training. However, there seems to be an increasing trend for teachers to prefer having training during conference times. 2014

Most surveyed marked hands on practice being their MOST important aspect of professional learning. Since they could choose more than one area, it’s safe to say that most like hands on practice relevant to their content area.
