Presentation transcript:

Assessment FOR Learning SO: Introductions. 3 stages of changing our paradigm from a traditional grading system to using assessment to ensure that students learn. I recently had the pleasure of hearing Jay McTighe speak about the change process for schools. He said change should be approached in 3 steps, THINK BIG, START SMALL AND GO FOR AN EARLY WIN. The process you will hear today follows this line of thinking. I will begin by providing an overview of how we “THOUGHT BIG”. Mrs. Avery will then lead us through “START SMALL” and two of our teachers will share their “EARLY WINS”. These teachers will share samples of their use of assessment in from two different perspectives; how the teacher implements standards based assessment and what type of tools they have created to utilize, and how the child is involved in this process and is starting to take responsibility for their own learning. Using Standards Based Reporting

SO: Stage 1 = Creating Conditions for Appropriate Use & Reporting of Student Achievement Provide a very brief explanation of how this process began as a result of our PLC work, both campus and principal. Essential Learnings: What must be learned by ALL students. Must have endurance and leverage. Focus, it’s the learning that matters. The 15 Fixes The Book Study The Training The Action Research Creating Conditions

Take Action! BA: Stage 2 = Taking Action, Involving a Few Teachers Explain the process of the initial action research. Rubrics

Collaboration ALL: Stage 3 = Collaborating with a Team of Volunteers to Write Policy SO will explain the process of putting the team together and the resources contributed from campus budgets. BA, MS & DA will explain the work that took place.

Implementation Cycle DA & MS: Implementation = “What it looks like in classroom” DA speak to and include, student involvement in goal setting (Kinder), samples of strong/weak work, video footage of kinder and 5th grade kids involved in the assessment process…other samples of appropriate use of assessment in kinder. MS speak to data collected on students to determine strengths/weaknesses, team process for supporting all kids, intervention to see that all kids learn…other examples from 3rd grade.
