Why have colonies?

Basic, natural materials used to make something What are raw materials? Basic, natural materials used to make something   : Products shipped and sold outside of a location (you sell exports and make $$$). : Products brought into a location (you buy imports and spend $$$). Exports Imports By exporting more than importing, a country is making money because it is selling more than it is buying.

Basic materials used to make something What are raw materials? Basic materials used to make something For example… TOBACCO from the Southern Colonies WHEAT AND GRAIN from the Middle Colonies LUMBER from the New England Colonies

These inexpensive raw materials were sent from the colonies to England…

…where they were turned into finished products, such as: Tobacco for smoking Bread Furniture and paper goods

These finished products were then sent back to the colonies from England…

…Where they were sold to the colonists for a higher price. Cha-Ching! England makes money off of its colonies!

England To summarize… Raw materials were exported from the 13 colonies and imported by England. These goods were less expensive. Manufactured goods were exported from England and imported by the 13 colonies. These goods were more expensive.

Cha-Ching! (For England)
