If you had had an exam, would you have studied hard? 3rd Conditional If you had had an exam, would you have studied hard?

We use The Third Conditional or Past Unreal Conditional sentences to talk about past conditions and results that never happened. If George had died young, he wouldn’t have had children. (But he didn’t die young, so he had children)

The IF clause presents the unreal condition. The result clause presents the imagined result of that condition. If George hadn’t been born, many people’s lives would have been worse. (But he was born, so their lives were better)

Use the Past Perfect in the IF clause. Use the would have + past participle in the result clause. If the film had won an Oscar, it would have become famous right away. David wouldn’t have been so sad if his girlfriend hadn’t broken up with him.

If + Subj. + had + past participle IF CLAUSE formation If + Subj. + had + past participle If George hadn’t been born,… RESULT CLAUSE formation Would + have + past participle …, many people’s lives would have been worse.

We can begin the conditional sentences with the IF clause or the result clause. The meaning will be the same. We have to use a comma between the two clauses only when the IF clause comes first. If he had won a million dollars, he would have traveled to China. He would have traveled to China if he had won a million dollars.

In questions the result clause may come before the IF clause. QUESTION formation In questions the result clause may come before the IF clause. Would + Subj. + have + past participle + if + had + past participle Would the film have become famous right away if it had won an Oscar?

If + had + past psticiple + , + would + Subj. + have + past participle QUESTION formation The IF clause may come before the result clause. But don’t forget to use the comma. If + had + past psticiple + , + would + Subj. + have + past participle Would the film have become famous right away if it had won an Oscar? If the film had won an Oscar, would it have become famous right away?

Past Unreal Conditionals are often used to express regret about something that happened or not in the past. If I had known Mary was in town, I would have invited her for the party. (I regret that I didn’t invite her)

Express Check Check the correct answer. We use the past perfect tense in… the IF clause. the result clause. We use the comma between the clauses when… the result clause comes first. the IF clause comes first.

the clauses cannot be inverted. the clauses can be inverted. Express Check In questions… the clauses cannot be inverted. the clauses can be inverted. The Past Unreal Conditional is often used… the express regret. the express agreement.

Let’s practice?

Read each Situation and retell them using the P.U.C. Bob wasn’t a first-class angel, so he didn’t have much self-confidence. If Bob had been a first-class angel, he would have had more self-confidence. George was unhappy about his business. He yelled at Nancy on Christmas Eve. If George hadn’t been unhappy about his business, he wouldn’t have yelled at Nancy on Christmas Eve.

Michael’s friends collected money for him, so he didn’t go to jail. If Michael’s friends hadn’t collected money for him, he would have gone to jail. Mary’s uncle lost $8,000.00, Brian got in trouble because of it. If Mary’s uncle hadn’t lost $8,000.00, Brian wouldn’t have gotten in trouble because of it.

Mr. Potter tricked Nicholas, so Nicholas didn’t sell Potter’s business. If Mr. Potter hadn’t tricked Nicholas, Nicholas would have sold his business. Daniel’s parents didn’t know about his problem, they didn’t help him right away. If Daniel’s parents had known about his problem, they would have helped him right away.

Let’s practice a little more?

Would you like to sing a song?
