Presentation transcript:

10.2 Caves Chemical weathering of limestone by water causes characteristic topography of karst areas. AKA Water dissolves limestone leaving oddly shaped land and caves.

Carbonic acid When rain falls through the atmosphere and infiltrates ground it picks up CO2. The added CO2 makes the water slightly acidic

Caves A natural underground opening with a connection into earths surface is called a CAVE.

Sea cave below Miner's Castle, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

Karst Topography Sinkhole- A depression in the ground caused by collapse of a cave or by dissolution of limestone. Karst Topography-regions that have sink holes and disappearing streams

Stalactites- Hangs from caves ceiling like an Icicle. Ground Water deposits Stalactites- Hangs from caves ceiling like an Icicle.

Stalagmites- rise up from floor of cave like upside down icicles. Ground water deposits Stalagmites- rise up from floor of cave like upside down icicles.

Hard water Tap water contains various dissolved solids; Iron, calcium, magnesium. Hard water in households can often cause problems Just as calcite precipitates in caves, it can also precipitate in water pipes.
