Endocrine and Immune Systems Chapter 13.5-6 Endocrine and Immune Systems

Endocrine System The endocrine system is the system of glands throughout the body that regulates body functions. It sends message in the blood through hormones-chemical substances used to regulate the body functions.

Glands and metabolism Glands are groups of cells, or an organ, that secretes a chemical substance. Metabolism is the process by which the body gets energy from food. It is regulated by the thyroid.

The glands of the endocrine system Pituitary: the “master gland” it is located brain and is responsible for growth and development and the other endocrine glands.

Thyroid: located in the neck and regulates metabolism and how the body uses energy. It regulates Breathing, Heart rate, Central & peripheral nervous systems, Body weight, Muscle strength, Menstrual cycles, Body temperature, Cholesterol levels, and much more! Glands

Glands Parathyroid: located behind the thyroid gland, it controls the calcium in our bodies-how much calcium is in our bones, and how much calcium is in our blood. Some scientist consider calcium the most important element in the body.

Glands Adrenals release the hormones that allows the body to respond to stress. Including adrenaline (also called epinephrine), cortisol (increase blood sugar) and aldosterone.

Hypothalamus maintains the body’s internal balance (homeostasis) Hypothalamus maintains the body’s internal balance (homeostasis). It is the gland that connects the nervous system to the endocrine system and it regulates the pituitary gland. Glands

Thymus signals the immune system to produce cells (T-cells) to fight infection. Slows down after puberty starts. Glands

Glands Pancreas secretes glucagon and insulin, which regulate blood sugar levels.

The big issues Diabetes is a disease that prevents the body from converting food into energy. It can lead to heart failure, blindness, and circulatory problems.

Diabetes People have too much sugar in their body. Type I occur when people do not produce enough insulin. Type II occurs occurs when the body cannot properly use the insulin it produces.
