Today’s Lesson In today’s lesson, you will add numbers to the hundreds and thousands place, with and without regrouping.

Think and Write Tell about a time in your everyday life where you had to add two or more numbers together. Examples: In the store, calculating lunch money, adding allowance

Adding Numbers Add 234 + 247. Step 1: Add the ones. Regroup the ones if needed. Step 2: Add the tens, regrouping if needed. Step 3: Add the hundreds. Model this on the board step by step, or have students do it on slates/communicator boards.

Adding More than 2 Numbers You can always add three numbers using the old-fashioned addition method. Start with the ones, then the tens, hundreds, and so on. Regroup if necessary. 2,752 3,114 + 6,367 umbers using the old-fashioned addition method. 752 114 +367

Practice using the White Boards 4,574 + 1,398 5,632 + 8,699 15,879 + 43,884 324,786 + 945,785 659,544 + 977,857 Practice using the White Boards

Problem 1 During a dive to the Great Barrier Reef, divers saw 178 clownfish, 344 sea stars, and 569 seahorses. How many sea creatures did they see in all?

Problem 2 On the coral reef, scientists counted 2,577 male seahorses and 2,489 female seahorses. How many seahorses were on the reef altogether?

Problem 3 Scientists counted 4,777 five-legged starfish and 3,946 six-legged starfish on the reef. How many starfish did they count in all?

Problem 4 There were 3,467 crabs counted on Wednesday, 3,894 on Thursday, and 3,785 crabs counted on Friday. How many total crabs were counted on all three days?
