Q) What caused this new Women’s Movement in the 1960s? A). Women had become frustrated with their status and roles in society. B) Feminism- The idea that women should have political, social, intellectual, and economic rights equal to those of men.

I. Women in the Workplace Women shut out of jobs considered “men’s work” Jobs available to women pay poorly. Women paid far less than men for doing same job. Women seldom promoted to management positions.

II. The Women’s Movement Emerges Betty Friedan’s The Feminine Mystique shows women’s dissatisfaction. Bestseller, helps galvanize women across the country.

“The problem lay buried, unspoken for many years in the minds of American women. It was a strange stirring, a sense of dissatisfaction, a yearning that women suffered in the middle of the twentieth century in the United States. Each suburban housewife struggled with it alone. As she made the beds, shopped for groceries, matched slipcover material, ate peanut butter sandwiches with her children, chauffeured Cub Scouts and Brownies, lay beside her husband at night, she was afraid to ask even of herself the silent question: 'Is this all?‘” - Betty Friedan, The Feminine Mystique, 1963

III. The Creation of NOW 1966, 28 professional women, including Betty Friedan, established the National Organization for Women (NOW). Press for day-care centers and equality in the workplace. Why are day-care centers so important???

IV. The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) 1972 Congress passed the ERA. ERA would have prohibited any government discrimination on the basis of sex. Phyllis Schlafly with religious and political groups launch a Stop-ERA campaign. Why??? The ERA will lead to drafting women, end of child support, and same sex marriages.

V. The New Right Emerges Conservatives build “pro-family” movement, later called New Right. Focus on social, cultural, and moral problems.

VI. The Movement Changes Society ERA defeated. Women’s movement changes roles, attitudes toward career, family (more equality in the family structure). Education, career opportunities expand. Many women run into “glass ceiling”
