Presentation transcript:

Soil A mixture of weathered rock, organic material, water, and air that is capable of supporting life.

Soil Horizons Soil is made up of layers known as horizons.

Horizon O Top Layer of Soil Thin Layer Contains loose and partly decayed ORGANIC matter

Horizon A Minerals mixed with Humus. Humus- dead organic material. Includes roots of plants, burrowing animals & insects. Darker soil

Horizon B The layer of soil mostly composed of clay and bits of weathered rock. Roots of trees will stretch to this layer to get water. Often called the subsoil.

Horizon C The layer that contains large unweathered rock.

Bedrock- Horizon R Solid, unweathered bottom layer of rock.

The Importance of Soil The nutrients in soil allows for the support of plant and animal life. Without it, plants could not grow.
