Medieval Feud PART 2

Feud between a Pope and a King Fights between popes and kings occurred often? Why? to challenge the authority of the other to show who had more power Who would the people listen to more

Who and Why Who was involved? Henry IV was the king Gregory VII was the Pope 2. What did they both want? Kings wanted church leaders to obey them while the pope claimed he could crown kings 3. What situation started the argument? Pope wanted kings to stop appointing high rank church officials King wanted and high-ranking church officials act as “allies” Without them, Henry risked losing power

Drama Henry’s reaction Decree passed by Gregory VII (the pope) Decree: official order forbidding kings from appointing church officials the decree limited Henry’s power Henry’s reaction refused to obey Gregory/decree Gregory was no longer the pope 3. Gregory’s reaction: Gregory to Henry, no longer the king Excommunicated Henry excludes a person from church membership Catholics believed they could not go to heaven if excommunicated

Reaction of the People Nobles defended the pope Gregory reaction Henry backed down begged for forgiveness admitted being wrong Gregory reaction Forgave Henry Gregory accepted new king, making Henry’s apology pointless Henry went to war and lost

Conclusion Concordat or Worms Terms of the concordat Concordat: agreement between the pope and king (new pope and new king many years later) Terms of the concordat Only popes had authority to appoint high- ranking church officials (bishops) only kings could give them jobs in the government
