MAKING COMPARISONS…

CALENTAMIENTO My black bed is next to my white nightstand. The windows are on the blue wall. My alarm clock is to the right of the lamp. The rug is beneath the bed in my room. My clothes are in my yellow closet.

MAKING COMPARISONS… In English, we use “-er” when making comparisons of two objects Ex: This watch is cheaper than a CD. In Spanish, “-er” does not exist. Instead we use the constructions: More than… (bigger, spicier, stronger) Less than… (smaller, cheaper, etc.)

En español… MÁS ________ QUE: more _____ than La cama negra es más grande que la cama blanca. MENOS ________ QUE: less ______ than El dormitorio de Paco es menos formal que el dormitorio de Ricardo. TAN _________ COMO: as _______ as El escritorio de Sr. Berkes es tan barato como el escritorio de Sra. Canga.

ADJETIVOS Remember, adjectives must agree with the nouns they modify: BARATO/A/OS/AS= CHEAP CARO/A/OS/AS= EXPENSIVE BONITO/A/OS/AS= PRETTY FEO/A/OS/AS= UGLY CÓMODO/A/OS/AS= COMFORTABLE INTERESANTE/S= INTERESTING FORMAL/ES*= FORMAL PEQUEÑO/A/OS/AS= SMALL PROPIO/A/OS/AS= OWN MISMO/A/OS/AS= SAME CORTO/A/OS/AS= SHORT LARGO/A/OS/AS= LONG

BONITO/FEO

CARO/BARATO

GRANDE/PEQUEÑO

BONITO/INTERESANTE

GUAPO/FORMAL

EXCEPTIONS…. There are FOUR exceptions to the rule of comparisons in Spanish. For example, in English we do not say something is “gooder” than something else. These four exceptions deal with the words meaning: GOOD, BAD, OLD & YOUNG ENGLISH ORIGINAL WORD IN SPANISH COMPARISON WORD GOOD BUENO/BIEN MEJOR BAD MALO/MAL PEOR OLD VIEJO MAYOR YOUNG JOVEN MENOR

En español… The hamburger is better than the pizza. La hamburguesa es mejor que la pizza. The bed is worse than the chair. La cama es peor que la silla. Hillary Clinton is older than Megan Fox. Hillary Clinton es mayor que Megan Fox. Taylor Swift is younger than Rihanna. Taylor Swift es menor que Rihanna.

MAYOR/MENOR
