Five interesting ways Shakespeare has influenced the modern world…

The Globe

Elizabethean Theatre Outdoor theaters No scenery Elaborate costumes donated by the wealthy People went to HEAR a play Bear Baiting, Prostitution, Gambling Groundlings – participated in the performance All male casts until 1660 Young boys played female roles Music, poetry, literature and drama flourished under Elizabeth's reign, largely due to the Queen's love of the arts.

Comedies vs. Tragedies Comedies end in marriage. Tragedies end in death(s).

Why Read The Tragedy or Romeo & Juliet? Why Read Shakespeare? Shakespeare understood the human condition. Reading and listening to his language and working to understand it makes you smarter. His writing is layered so that all different types of people can appreciate his stories. Why Read The Tragedy or Romeo & Juliet? It is NOT the world’s greatest romantic love story, but rather a tale about duty, impulsiveness, pride, and love in its MANY forms. The play is timeless, and much can be learned about people through its story. Keep in Mind… • Theater is a mirror of the people and society from which it springs. • During Shakespeare’s time, young women (like Juliet) were controlled specifically by their fathers. They were expected to marry within their own class. • Women had little say in who they married, and most marriages were arranged. • Love was not really known back then, or at least it did not matter. Marriages were arranged in order to promote status and wealth within families.
