Your Assignment Who did George Washington believe should have the most power? States? Federal Government? Take notes on p. 9 of your packet. At the end circle which he believe should have more power (bottom p.9)

President Washington’s Cabinet Alexander Hamilton: Secretary of Treasury He deals with USA’s economy, banks, and businesses He thinks the federal government should have more power. Thomas Jefferson: Secretary of State He’s supposed to deal with other countries He thinks the states should have more power.

Hamilton’s Financial Plan Take notes on p. 9! Hamilton’s Financial Plan Hamilton thought the USA should “assume,” or take on the debt of all the states. This was money the states still owed from the Revolution. Washington made it happen.

Jefferson v. Hamilton Take notes on p. 9! Hamilton: wanted USA to stay on the good side of Britain. This was good for US business, because the USA traded a lot with Britain. USA should stay out of war between Britain and France!

Jefferson v. Hamilton Take notes on p. 9! Jefferson: wanted USA to honor its alliance with France from the Revolutionary War. USA should aid France in its war with Britain! Washington sides with Hamilton and decides the US will stay out of the war!

Whiskey Rebellion Take notes on p. 9! Farmers got mad when US government raised taxes to help pay Revolutionary War debts. Washington says taxes must be paid. He personally leads an army to put down the rebellion.

Washington’s Farewell Address Take notes on p. 9! Washington’s Farewell Address When Washington left office he gave a famous farewell speech. He warned the country about two things: The USA should mind its own business. Leave other countries alone! Don’t form rival political parties!
