Monday August 28th 2017 Independent Dependent Constant/Control In any good experiment, scientist use variables to test their hypothesis. Usually there are three (3) variables to every experiment. A ___________________ variable is one factor that is changed by the person doing an experiment. A ___________________ variable is the factor being measured in an experiment. A ___________________ variable is any factor in the experiment that does not change. Independent Dependent Constant/Control

Tuesday August 29th 2017 Sarah was determined to see if putting egg shells in potting soil would increase the height of her ten plants. She put the egg shells in five of her flower pots but didn’t put any in the remaining five flower pots. What is the control group? Sarah Flower Pots with Egg Shells Flower Pots with No Egg Shells Plants

How quickly they stapled the stacks of papers Thursday August 30th 2017 Smithers thinks that a special juice will increase the productivity of workers at the Springfield Nuclear Plant. He creates two groups of 50 workers each and assigns each group the same task (stapling a stack of papers together). Group A is given the special juice to drink while they work. Group B is given a placebo drink (sugar/water). After an hour, Smithers counts how many stacks of papers each group has made. Data: Group A – 1,587 stacks Group B – 2,113 stacks Identify the: Control group Independent variable Dependent variable Group B “The Juice” How quickly they stapled the stacks of papers

Friday September 1st 2017 Half of shower sprayed w/water Coconut Juice Homer notices that his shower is covered in a strange green slime. His friend, Barney, tells him that coconut juice will get rid of the green slime. Homer decides to check this out by spraying half of the shower with coconut juice. He sprays the other half of the shower with water. After 3 days of “treatment” there is no change in the appearance of green slime on either side of the shower. Identify the: Control group. Independent variable. Dependent variable. What should Homer’s conclusion be? Half of shower sprayed w/water Coconut Juice Green Slime Coconut juice does not get rid of green slime.
