Presentation transcript:

Welcome to Ms. Miner’s English/ Language Arts Class Please… Take both flyers from the tall table at the back of the room. Sit anywhere (even the “comfy” areas if you’d like!) Grab a “Words of Encouragement” from the stack at each desk group and write a note to your child. I will give it to them this week as a surprise! Please put their first and last name at the top. See the example Bob Simpson Dear Bobby, _____________________ We are so proud of you! We know you will do great things in 6th grade. Keep reading, writing and working hard._____ ________________________________ _______________________________ ____________________Love,_______ ____________________Mom and Dad_

A Little About Me… I graduated from James Madison University, both undergrad and graduate school. This is my 2 year at RBMS, and first year in a while teaching 6th grade! It’s good to be back in 6th. :) I am the Yearbook Sponsor/Editor this year! I love to read, spend time outdoors, and I dabble in VERY amateur photography for fun. :) I’m a very energetic person and love being able to share that enthusiasm with students!

I am not able to give updated grade reports by email. madeline.miner@lcps.org 6th grade staff, as a whole, sends a weekly bulletin to keep you informed. Email is the best way to contact me, if needed. If a phone conference/face to face conference is needed, please schedule by email first! I am not able to give updated grade reports by email. Please sign up for ParentVue! Link is on the RBMS website and on Ms. Miner’s personal website. https://www.lcps.org/Domain/22256 My planning is during 4th and 8th block - those are the best times to reach me while I am at school. School phone # → 571-434-3220 House C # → 571-434-3226

REMIND is an app that allows teachers and students and parents to communicate quickly and safely about academics. If you’d like to sign up for REMIND, links have been posted on your student’s Google Classroom page! Just click the link and follow the directions! :)

I will aim to send out an email once a month with updates about class.

Supplies - please double check with your child, and check in with them over the course of the year to ensure they don’t run out!!

Young Adult Novel = a book written for ages 12-18. These books tend to have more mature themes and events. If this is a concern for you, please monitor what your child is reading! If you DO NOT want your student to have access to these books, please email Ms. Miner ASAP saying so. VERY IMPORTANT!!!

Track Lexile levels Improve nonfiction reading skills Goal is to do at least 4 a month at 75% or higher Try to do 1-2 a week at home

Units of Study Connecting our reading and writing to real world events and projects Followed through 6th, 7th, and 8th Units → Narrative, Informational and Argumentative.

One last thought about reading...

Thank you for coming to Mrs. Simpson’s English/ Language Arts Class Bob Simpson Please… Place your Encouraging Words in the tray on Ms. Miner’s desk before you leave! Thanks so much for coming. :) Dear Bobby, _____________________ We are so proud of you! We know you will do great things in 6th grade. Keep reading, writing and working hard._____ ________________________________ _______________________________ ____________________Love,_______ ____________________Mom and Dad_
