Pathway Subjects at Kirk Balk Academy

KS4 Structure Core P Broad and balanced curriculum Focus on the basics of English and Maths Entitlement for students to study the full Ebacc Expectation to choose at least one Ebacc, to support students to achieve a ‘broad and balanced’ curriculum leading to a broad and balanced portfolio of qualifications that will keep doors open in the future 8 subjects basic (with Dual award Science) Flexible depending on the needs of the individual EBacc subjects = three year courses over Y9, 10, 11 This model will take some pressure off in Y11; and still return good grades in Y10 (Non Ebacc Subjects) All discussions about time allocation will be done at Christmas P

8 Subject as a minimum (Starting Point) KS4 Structure 8 Subject as a minimum (Starting Point) Increase Subject Studied Consolidate knowledge in Subjects Studied Broad and balanced curriculum Focus on the basics of English and Maths Entitlement for students to study the full Ebacc Expectation to choose at least one Ebacc, to support students to achieve a ‘broad and balanced’ curriculum leading to a broad and balanced portfolio of qualifications that will keep doors open in the future 8 subjects basic (with Dual award Science) Flexible depending on the needs of the individual EBacc subjects = three year courses over Y9, 10, 11 This model will take some pressure off in Y11; and still return good grades in Y10 (Non Ebacc Subjects) All discussions about time allocation will be done at Christmas P

Example 1 KS4 - Students choosing one EBacc subject and two non-EBacc subjects to start in Year 9 Non-EBacc subjects completed at the end of Year 10 A total of 10 hrs allocated to Y10 pathway subjects This Leaves 6 hrs of Guided Pathway time in Y11 to allocate This Could be 6 hr new subject or 3 hr new subject plus extra time for En/Ma or all En/Ma Discussions to start about additional time to be done at the end of term 1 P

Example 2 KS4 - Students choosing two EBacc subjects and one non-EBacc subject to start in Year 9 This pathway could allow subjects to attain full Ebacc (MFL, 1 Humanities) Non-EBacc subjects completed at the end of Year 10 This Leaves 2 hrs of Guided Pathway time in Y10 to allocate and 3 hrs in Y11 This Could be new subject or Extra time for En/Ma Time can also be given to other underperforming Ebacc Subjects (e.g. Science) P

Students choosing three EBacc subjects Example 2 KS4 - Students choosing three EBacc subjects This pathway could allow subjects to attain full Ebacc (MFL, 1 Humanities) Health warning for students following this pathway (must be confident that Eng/Ma are strong as there will be no additional time in Y11) The 4hr could be an additional subject (e.g. creative subject Art/Music in 1 year) LIMITED PATHWAY P

What opportunities does this KS4 curriculum offer Chance to review choices into Year 11 Learning over time in Years 9 and 10 to promote best possible outcomes for students Chance to use pathway subject time in Y10 and Y11 to boost grades in English and Maths Flexibility
