What to Expect During the Middle School Years

EAST LYME MIDDLE SCHOOL 3 Floors/Houses (Bay, Ocean, and Sound) 3 to 4 teams (kivas) per floor Administrator, Counselor, and Administrative Assistant on each floor Approximately 80-90 students per team with 5 teachers

Typical 5th Grade Schedule 8:15-8:30 Students enter Kiva and get ready for the day 8:30-8:35 Homebase 8:40-9:10 Academy or Connections 9:12-10:00 Academic Class in Kiva (LA) 10:00-10:48 Academic Class in Kiva (Math) 10:50-11:30 Academic Class in Kiva (SS) 11:30- 12:00 Lunch 12:06-1:02 Academic Class in Kiva (Sci) 1:05-1:51 Life Arts Day 1/Music Day 2 1:54-2:40 PE Day 1/World Lang Day 2 2:45- Locker, Homebase and Dismissal

Keys to Success Organization Agenda Students are provided with and Agenda to keep track of nightly and long-term assignments. Parents should check the agenda regularly to make sure it is being used. Binder Pick one day a week, every week, to help your student clean the binder in case it is disorganized. Backpack Remind your student to put everything needed for school back in the backpack right when completed the night before. Pick one day a week, every week, to clean the backpack.

Keys to Success Homework Time and Location It is important to establish a set study time every day to help manage the busy schedules. The study environment or location is also very important. Free of distractions like the TV, phone, computer, and siblings Neat and organized In an area that can be easily monitored Post goals or priorities near your study space Check Homework Hotline Check quality of work when completed.

Keys to Success 3. Communication Newsletters from the school will be available on-line (hard copies may be picked up in the office). Long-term assignments and quiz grades will often go home for signatures. E-mail teachers and counselors anytime to check in with questions, ask for updates or express concerns. Keys to Success Wellness Establish an early, consistent bed-time free from electronics. Students need a nutritious breakfast before coming to school and a nutritious snack.
