How to use other people’s information to make yourself look smart!!! Research and Sources How to use other people’s information to make yourself look smart!!!

Research-Where do you start? What are some great resources for research? *Educational sites—ending in .edu (sites for universities, educationally sponsered sites) * Databases –school circulation program, emedia, Pioneer * Sites that end in .gov or .org (example—Smithsonian)

What are some sites that are NOT great for research? *Commercial sites—sites ending in .com—they try to sell things to you. *Sites that are used for entertainment—youtube, facebook, twitter *Sites that allow people who are not experts to contribute—pinterest, wikipedia, youtube Sites that have a url with someone’s name

BONUS QUESTION!! Your science teacher corrects your homework, your English teacher corrects your grammar. Who corrects or fact-checks items on the Internet?

DON’T BE FOOLED

Your Guide to the Internet What is the Internet? a vast computer network linking smaller computer networks worldwide (usually preceded by the ). The Internet includes commercial, educational, governmental, and other networks, all of which use the same set of communications protocols.

Parts of a Web Page

What are you searching for? Good ideas in searching: Use narrow terms—’shortstop’ instead of ‘baseball’ Take out unnecessary words – ‘Justin Bieber top songs 2012’instead of ‘How many good songs did Justin Beiber sing this year that people liked?’ Narrow your search by adding a subject area at the end of the search– ‘baseball and soccer history’ instead of ‘baseball and soccer’

BONUS QUESTION Which of the following search strings will give you the best information about the differences between reptiles and amphibians? A. “reptiles and amphibians” B. “reptiles vs amphibians” C. “reptiles, amphibians, differences, science” D. “What are the differences between reptiles and amphibians?”

CRAP Currency How recent is the information? Can you locate a date when the page(s) were written/created/updated? Reliability What kind of information is included in the website? Based on your other research, is it accurate? ...complete? Is the content primarily fact, or opinion? Authority Can you determine who the author/creator is? Is there a way to contact them? Is there evidence they're experts on the subject? Purpose / Point of View What's the intent of the website (to persuade, to sell you something, etc.)? What is the domain (.edu, .org, .com, etc.)? How might that influence the purpose/point of view?
