Properties of Matter and Chemical Reactions Science 9

How many properties of matter can you remember from last year?

Properties of Matter can be broken down into 2 categories Physical: Characteristics that can be observed or measured without changing chemical identity Chemical: Ability of matter to react with another substance to form one or more different substances

Physical Properties Viscosity, state of matter Melting point, boiling point Colour, malleability, texture, hardness Conductivity

Chemical Properties Combustibility, react with acid, react with oxygen, lack of reactivity (innate)

Chemical Reactions One or more pure substances interact to form a different substance or substances Example: Dancing raisins demo The reaction is: CH3COOH(aq) + NaHCO3(aq) → NaCH3COO(aq) + H2O(l) + CO2(g) Acetic acid + sodium bicarbonate

Can you think of any other chemical reactions?
