LO To Solve Equations RAG Key Words; Unknown, Solve 1-Dec-18 Starter Activity We are beginning a new unit of work. Glue the Learning Journey into your book. Do not cut it out, it will fit onto a page. Answer the self assessment questions.

Each time you learn a new skill write the date in the box above the learning journey. This will help you to track the progress that you are making. Date Solving Equations I am beginning to understand the role of the = sign I can find missing numbers. I can construct and solve linear equations with unknowns on one side including negative numbers. I can construct and solve linear equations with unknowns on both sides including with negative numbers and brackets. I can construct and solve simultaneous equations.

Solve these simultaneous equations using an algebraic method: True or false? 3 + 7 = 8 + 2 How do you know? Solve these equations 3y - 4 = 11 Y - 6 = 2 2 Solve 3c – 7 = 2c + 3 Solve these simultaneous equations using an algebraic method: 3a + 2b = 16 5a - b=18 I can construct and solve linear equations with unknowns on one side including negative numbers. I am beginning to understand the role of the = sign I can find missing numbers. I can construct and solve linear equations with unknowns on both sides, including negative numbers and brackets. I can construct and solve simultaneous equations.

Which one is the odd one out? Why? Think / Pair / Share Which one is the odd one out? Why? 6t + 4 = 22 3t + 3t + 4 = 22 4t + 5t = 22 - t t + t + t + t + t + t + 4 = 22 2(3t + 2) = 22 8t = 22 + 2t

How can we use equivalent expressions to solve equations? 10 + 4 = 10 + t = 14 10 + t = 10 + 4 t = 4 Ask pupils to suggest equivalent expressions on mini whiteboards before revealing the answers.

How can we use equivalent expressions to solve equations? t + t + 5 5 + 12 = 2t + 5 = 17 t + t + 5 = 5 + 12 t + t = 12 t = 6

How can we use equivalent expressions to solve equations? 3t + 6 = t + 16 t + t + t + 6 = t + 6 + 10 t + t + 6 = 6 + 10 t + t = 10 t = 5

Today’s Task Choose a set of equations, remember to choose the set that will move your learning on.

I am beginning to understand the role of the = sign Which of these are true and which are false? 1) 3 + 7 = 7 + 3 2) 5 + 2 = 2 + 5 3) 4 + 6 = 8 + 2 4) 5 + 9 = 10 + 3 + 2 5) 20 – 3 = 3 – 20 6) 20 – 7 = 16 – 3 7) 7 + 4 = 15 – 4 I can find missing numbers.

I can solve linear equations with unknowns on one side. 1) 3y + 1 = 13 2) 2y + 8 = 22 3) 4y + 5 = 85 4) 7y + 2 = 23 5) 11y + 3 = 58 6) 6s + 4 = 22 7) 8 + 4y = 36 8) 22t + 5 = 71 9) 10g + 2 = 42 I can solve linear equations with unknowns on both sides. 1) 4y + 3 = 2y + 11 2) 5y + 7 = 3y + 11 3) 9y + 7 = 15y + 1 4) 8y + 3 = 2y + 21 5) 6y + 4 = 3y + 19 6) 8 (x + 1) = 2( x + 16) 7) 7(x + 4) = 10 ( x + 1)

2t - 6 = 13 3t - 4 = t + 6 Plenary Think / Pair / Share Can you use the same method to solve these equations? Explain your answer. 2t - 6 = 13 3t - 4 = t + 6

Colour in the person that represents your mindset in today’s lesson.

Progress Pyramid One question I would like answered… Two things I am not sure about yet…. Three things I understand well enough to explain to someone else…

Colour in the arrow, up to the statement which best describes your current understanding. I’m so confident - I could explain this to someone else! I can get to the right answer but I don’t understand well enough to explain it yet. I understand some of this but I don’t understand all of it yet. I tried hard and I listened but I am finding this challenging. I will make sure that I get help with this next lesson. I do not understand any of this yet. There are things I could do to be a better learner next lesson.
