Warm-Up: Examine the picture. What kinds of things are present in the ecosystem that might be causing the fish-kill? What happened to the fish to cause the event? What is the result of what happened to the fish?

Objectives Essential Question: By examining texts and print materials, students must identify what processes of nitrogen and oxygen affect ecosystem health How are oxygen and nitrogen cycled in the environment and what happens when they are out of balance? Essential Question:

Vocabulary Words 2/20: Nitrogen. Runoff. Nitrogen-fixing bacteria. Ammonia. Eutrophication. Algae Bloom.

I Do I will narrate how to make connections between topics in the current text and previous texts while reading.

Work Period (You Do) In groups, students will complete the following task(s): In groups, Students will create 4 claims, supported with evidence, about how 4 groups would feel about eutrophication, as it is described in their text. The groups include: fishers, farmers using fertilizers, the NOAA, and animals. When finished, partners will make a poster describing their statements and illustrating the situation for one of the 4 groups. They will present their posters to the class as time permits.

Closing We will return to our warm-up to discuss, using information from our text, a better explanation of what happened in the deadly scenario.

Warm-Up: Examine the picture. What kinds of things are present in the ecosystem that might be causing the fish-kill? What happened to the fish to cause the event? What is the result of what happened to the fish?
