Using Accountability Data and Federal Funds to Support At-Risk Populations in a Small District LEP Coordinator Meeting- 2 October 2014 Dr. Wayne M. Eberle II, Director of Accountability and Federal Programs Watauga County Schools

Know Your District Make up of Watauga County Schools 8- K-8 schools 1 high school Serving approx. 4400 students LEP students range from 0 at a school to 10% of total population at our largest K-8 school 3 LEP Teachers (2 of which travel to serve multiple schools)

Know Your Organizational Capacity and be able to Recognize Financial Flexibility Does your district receive Federal or State funds in the form of: Title I Title II Title III Title VI Small County Supplemental Funding Low Wealth County Supplemental Funding At-Risk PRC 069 Disadvantaged Student Supplemental Funding (DSSF)

Know Your Students and Where Trends Lie Some principals/ schools are tracking very specific subgroups and placing additional teacher support in those areas. For example: Males LEP Grades 3-5 Math THIS IS NOT POSSIBLE WITHOUT DATA!

Focus on the Future with some Essential Questions Can you record your outcomes? Are they measurable? Data should drive your future decisions. Do you have a vision for the future? Additional possibilities for the expansion can serve as a motivator. Can you recognize the potential hurdles that may exist? Recognize the “unintended” consequences. Are your ideas sustainable? Current now and current in the future. Can you “plant seeds” for future growth? Work with other stakeholders such as BOE or County Commissioners to ensure buy-in.
