Beach (Re)nourishment Pumping offshore sand back to the beach. Pros: Does not cause other erosion. Cons: Very expensive and needs to be done about every 5 years.

Oceanic Zones Three major oceanic zones where plants and animals live in the ocean. Intertidal zone, neritic zone, and open ocean zone. These zones contain the largest ecosystem on Earth.

Oceanic Zone

Oceanic Zones – Intertidal Zone Area of the seafloor between high tide and low tide. It bridges the gap between land and water. Includes tide pools, estuaries, mangrove swamps, and rocky coastal area.

Oceanic Zones – Intertidal Zone

Oceanic Zones – Neritic Zone Water above the continental shelf. Underwater forest of kelp and grassy meadows of sea grass home to tiny fish, sea turtles, sea cows, seahorse, and tiny shrimp. Includes coral reefs and all of the organisms that live there.

Oceanic Zones – Neritic Zone

Oceanic Zones – Open ocean zone Is beyond the continental slope and contains 65% of the water in the ocean. This zone is further divided into subzones. Euphotic zone or Sunlit zone: photosynthesis take place here Bathyal zone– It is in darkness, with only a little light. Contains eels, squid, sperm whales, and hagfish Abyssal zone – Complete darkness and cold temperatures. Contains angler fish, vampire squid, ostracod shrimp, and other bioluminescence organisms.

Oceanic Zones – Open ocean zone

Organisms in the Ocean Plankton – Organisms that cannot swim; they float. Phytoplankton – tiny plants that float and photosynthesize. Zooplankton - tiny animal creatures Nekton – Organisms that can swim such as bony fish, sharks, whales, turtles, etc. Bentos – Organisms that live on the ocean floor such as starfish, oysters, clams, and sea cumbers.
