National Sources of Philanthropic Revenue 2015 charitable giving Total = $373 billion Increase of 4% over 2014 Foundation grantmaking reached an estimated $41.00 billion in 2010, according to estimates provided by the Foundation Center. Of that amount, approximately $19.50 billion was given by family foundations. Grantmaking by corporate foundations is included in the estimate for giving by corporations.6 Combined charitable giving by individuals, bequest, and family foundations amounted to an estimated $254.10 billion in 2010, or about 87 percent of the total. Charitable giving by corporations is estimated to be $15.29 billion in 2010. This includes an estimate provided by the Foundation Center of $4.70 billion in grants and gifts made by corporate foundations to recipient organizations and individuals. Giving USA, 2016

Recipient Types

The AHA! Individuals + charitable bequests = 80% of total. Foundation grant-making = 15% of the total. About 65% of independent foundation giving is from family foundations. Individuals + Bequest + Family Foundations = 87 percent.

Identify How many donors do you have? Who among your donors can give more? Who is not a current donor who might support your work?

Investigate Who knows these donors and prospective donors well enough to help determine the best ask amount? Who can inform the overall strategy?

Inform and Involve What are 3-4 ways you can inform and/or involve donors and prospective donors to help them understand the impact of your work? If it is a new strategy, what resources are required? If it is an existing strategy, how can it be strengthened to be more effective? What resources will this require? What are the potential hurdles that might keep us from executing these strategies? Share the 2-3 strategies you are most excited about
