GEOMETRY: Chapter 9 9.5 Trigonometric Ratios

Tangent Ratio Image taken from: Geometry. McDougal Littell: Boston, 2007. P. 466.

Complementary Angles In the right triangle, angle A and angle B are complementary so you can use the same diagram to find the tangent of angle A and the tangent of angle B. Notice that the leg adjacent to angle A is the leg opposite angle B and the leg opposite angle A is the leg adjacent to angle B. Image taken from: Geometry. McDougal Littell: Boston, 2007. P. 467.

Ex. 1: Find tan D and tan F. Write each answer as a fraction and as a decimal rounded to four places. Images taken from: Geometry. McDougal Littell: Boston, 2007. P. 458.

Ex. 2: Find the value of x. Answer: 29.4 Images taken from: Geometry. McDougal Littell: Boston, 2007. P. 467.

Ex. 3: Find the height of the flagpole to the nearest foot. Answer: 51 ft Images taken from: Geometry. McDougal Littell: Boston, 2007. P. 468.

Special Right Triangles You can find the tangent of an acute angle measuring 300, 450, or 600 by applying what you know about special right triangles.

Ex. 4 Use a special right triangle to find the tangent of a 450 angle. Answer: tan 450=1
