Note Sheet Considerations Thesis Statement – should have broad internal/external conflicts (not specific plot events) AND how he grows as a person Organization Style – set up intro, body px’s, conclusion INTRO – BACKGROUND = introduce novel title, author, bit of plot Specific, detailed plot events for EACH body Remember topic sentences Three integrated quotes w/in-text citations (PAGE #’s for novel) For Common Lit quote – introduce article title and author Works Cited – set up format for BOTH novel and article; URL’s can be copied/pasted from Google Classroom

Character Arc - the personal journey a character takes throughout a novel The Change Arc: the protagonist undergoes a radical personal change that transforms him/her from one type of person to a totally different type of person. The Growth Arc:  the protagonist overcomes an internal opposition (weakness, fear, the past etc.) while he faces an external opposition; as a result, he becomes a fuller, better person. He’s still pretty much who he was, just upgraded to Protagonist 2.0. The Shift Arc (variant of the Growth Arc): the protagonist changes his perspective, learns different skills, or gains a different role. The end-result is not “better” or more than the starting point, just different. The protagonist has not overcome a grand inner resistance; he/she simply gained a new set of skills or assumed a new position, maybe discovered a talent he forgot he had, or began a different vocation. The Fall Arc: commonly known as a “tragedy”, the Fall Arc follows the protagonist as he dooms himself and/or others, and declines into insanity, immorality, or death.

Thesis Statement - Brainstorm As you consider the internal/external conflicts below, THINK: How does Junior grow as a person from these struggles? INTERNALLY (within himself) and throughout the novel, Junior struggles with the following: Insecurity? Anger? Grief (loss of others? of hope)? Fear (of failing)? While dealing with these internal struggles. Junior must also face these EXTERNAL conflicts: Racism/prejudice? Alcoholism? Death? ?

Thesis Statement Examples As Junior struggles internally with ____________ and ____________, while also facing external conflicts of ____________ and ____________, as a result, he learns to ____________ and ____________. When Junior faces his inner demons of ____________ and ____________, he must also confront external pressures such as ____________ and ____________; in doing so, he learns to ____________.

Body Paragraph Organization Styles Option #1 Body #1: internal 1/internal 2 Body #2: external 1/external 2 Body #3: resulting growth & change Option #2 Body #1: internal/external combo Body #2: internal/external combo Body #3: resulting growth/change Option #3 Body #1: (beginning of novel) Internal/external (+ resulting growth & change)? Body #2: (middle of novel) Body #3: (end of novel) Internal/external + resulting growth & change
