Presentation transcript:

“Profaneness has gone out into all the land” (Jeremiah 23:15) Profanity “Profaneness has gone out into all the land” (Jeremiah 23:15)

Important Words to Understand To SANCTIFY = to set something apart as belonging to God. What is sanctified is then HOLY What is not holy is common Profane = “Outside the temple” The two are not to be mixed.

Nadab and Abihu (Leviticus 10) Offered fire “which He had not commanded them” (“profane fire” - NKJ) They died before the Lord “It shall be a statute forever through your generations, that you may distinguish between holy and unholy” “…make a distinction between the holy and the profane” (NASV)

Two ways one may be guilty: 1. Treating unholy things as though they were holy. 2. Treating holy things as if they were common.

Belshazzar’s Feast - Daniel 5 “Then they brought the gold vessels that had been taken out of the temple, the house of God which was in Jerusalem; [sanctified vessels] and the king and his nobles, his wives and his concubines drank from them” (vs. 3). The writing on the wall (Daniel 5:5-6) Daniel 5:23

Gods NAME is Holy – Special “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain” (Exodus 20:7). Leviticus 19:12 – No false oaths. “Make no oath at all” (Matthew 5:34) A Person’s name represents the person Profanity is possible in “worship”.

The Lord’s Day is Holy (Rev. 1:10) The Sabbath was holy (Exodus 20:11) -- Reminder of the Exodus (Dt. 5:15) -- Strict rules forbidding common work “Lord’s Day,” reminder of resurrection Typical of NT, no rules stated Day for doing things for the Lord that we have no time for during the week.

The Lord’s Supper is Holy Jesus sanctified it – Luke 22:19 Some profaned it – I Cor. 11:20-21 Ways it may be profaned -- Changing the elements -- Changing the purpose -- “Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord” (1 Cor. 11:27 ESV)

Our Bodies are Holy ( I Cor. 6:19-20) Not “outside the temple” – they are the temple! Purpose: to glorify God (vs. 20) We have been sanctified (I Cor. 6:9-11). We must live “as is proper among saints” (Eph. 5:3) Not as others. We must give an account (2 Cor. 5:10) Serious to defile the temple (1 Cor. 3:17)

Church is Holy – I Cor. 3:16-17 Defiled by in unworthy members. Defiled by human authority Defiled by bringing in secular “Take these things away! Do not make My Father’s house a house of merchandise.” John 2:16

“Profaneness has gone out into all the land” (Jeremiah 23:15) “Let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints” (Ephesians 5:3)

Leviticus 10:1-10 “It shall be a statute forever through your generations, that you may distinguish between holy and unholy” (Lev. 10:9,10 – NKJ) “…make a distinction between the holy and the profane” (NASV)

Leviticus 10:1-3 They offered “profane” (NKJ) fire. Fire in itself is not sinful. This was fire “which He had not commanded them” (vs. 1) = profane “By those who come near Me, I must be regarded as holy” (verse 3). Anything brought into worship “which He has not commanded” is profanity.

Other Examples King Ahaz (II Kings 16:10) King Uzziah (II Chronicles 26:16-18) Doctrines of Men (Matthew 15:8-9) Merchandising in the Temple (Mt. 21:13) Instrumental Music Entertainment in Worship Recreation as work of the church

Two ways one may be guilty: 1. Treating unholy things as though they were holy.
