8-MEN IN THE BOX DEFENSE I. Questions to ask as a defensive staff. A. Who do you have to beat to win your conference? B. List the offensive sets you will have to defend during the upcoming season. (continued)

What sets will you see more than once? example: Carmi- Spread-Power I-Wing T CZR- Wishbone DBL Tite-Slot/Slot Eldorado- DBL Tite T Elverado- Doesn’t matter Carterville- Army Fairfield- Spread (shotgun)- Spread I Hamilton Co.- Spread (shotgun)- no backs Sesser-Valier- Pro Split-backs Cairo- Doesn’t matter

8-MEN IN THE BOX DEFENSE IV. How will we prepare our players to play multiple positions? A. Teach technique: NG-0/shade/123- zero will be base DT-5/4/3/2- 4 will be base OLB-9/6/7/wide 8/Drop-6 will be base ILB-30/20/10/2/0 stack S/S-Basic SS tech-plus 20 Stack *Toughest to teach- 7 Tech

8-MEN IN THE BOX DEFENSE V. Teaching Block Recognition-players need to know what blocks to expect when playing certain techniques. Example: 5 Tech DT- T/TE DBL (expect to be trapped) 3Tech DT/NG-G/T DBL (trap down front OT) 9 Tech DLB- TE/T “X” Block TE Down/FB kick out TE Down/Play side G-”G” *We will spend most of our defensive practice time reacting to and defending offensive blocks.
