Intasc standard page Name of Artifact: Final Project Date: April 29,2016 Course: EDUC 230, The Exceptional Child Brief Description: For this assignment, I created a power point that presented my classroom deign and accommodations I would make to aide students. I will use picture of what my classroom would look like to meet all of my students needs. Rationale: To document my understanding of Standard #2, Learning Differences, I chose to include my Final Project. This assignment demonstrates my ability to allow each student a learning environment that they can succeed in. This assignment demonstrates that I am able to use any resources and services to meet my students needs.

My classroom space Every child is different so as a teacher I cannot expect every child to learn exactly the same. I want every child to feel safe within my classroom as well. One area in my classroom will be the “peace” area. The Peace area is a place for anyone to calm down. I will include bean bags and multiple different types of blankets to soothe the upset student. The bathroom is necessary so that the students are in direct contact with a staff member while using the restroom. I like to have independent work areas so that if a student wishes to be alone they can go to that area. When a student is in the independent work area everyone will know that they would rather be alone at that time. The open area / play area is important so that each child does get some sort of break throughout the day. In this area I will also have a large carpet with multiple books & sensory bottles.

Exceptionalities: Deaf and hard of hearing Important for Phonics to play a large role in the classroom. Phonics is the building blocks for students to be able to sound out words and correctly. One of the biggest and probably best accommodations is to have sign language within the classroom. I believe sign language is a must have in order for deaf students to be given the best opportunity. Giving very well detailed instructions on paper will also aid in making sure the student understands the lessons.

Exceptionalities: ADHD I will make sure that the child’s desk is away from/opposite side of the room from windows and away from the door so there are no distractions. To make sure a student with ADHD understands, I will give out instructions one at a time and will repeat the instructions as needed. I will also use visuals such as outlines and charts to assist students in concentrating. “ your most effective tool in helping a student with ADHD is a positive attitude”

Exceptionalities: ADHD For my students to stay organized I will provide them with a 2 pocket folder. On one side I will place homework/ assignments due. On the other side I will place completed assignments that can be stored in another area for later use. A quiet work area is vital to students with ADHD so my independent work area will assist them in focusing. “Generally, children need only a gentle nudge to get back to work. But with children who have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), teachers need to understand how that disability interferes with their ability to learn and stay on task.” (Dunne,2007)

Exceptionalities: Emotional and behavior Disorders A helpful tip I have received is if you have students with emotional or behavioral disorders is to have a posted schedule and follow it as closely as you can. In order to prevent major break-downs I will space out the more challenging work for a little mind breaks.

Exceptionalities: emotional and behavior disorders Another accommodation would be to give clear examples. An example will give students a target or goal to continually look at. This way they know what the assignment is to look like and how to ask questions about it. When doing group work a child with emotional and behavioral disorders will be given the choice if they would like to work together with someone or alone.

Classroom management For my classroom management I think it will be very important for my exceptional learners to be mixed in with non-special needs students. I do not want my exceptional learners to feel as if they are isolated when they are within my classroom. Pair an exceptional learner with a non-exceptional learner

Classroom management Mix exceptional learners & non-exceptional learners together within the classroom Allow children to ask questions about anything I will do my best to make sure every student has a goal and is continually working on it.

Teacher support One of my goals is to establish a professional relationship with each of my students in order to be able to truly help them within my classroom. I understand that during some subjects I may have to spend more time explaining my lessons due to learning disabilities. I will make sure that every child is being given the opportunity to learn everything I will teach.

Summary As an aspiring teacher I know that being within a classroom will not always be easy. I am however fully prepared to take on this adventure and see where it may lead for me. I believe that exceptional learners are going to be another adventure for me to be able to learn from. I believe that I will gain so much knowledge from one simple thing, my students. I cannot wait to see what my students can teach me about my own profession.
