Romeo and Juliet, Act Two, Scenes i-ii Reading for Understanding, Pair Work

Directions Read the scene with your partner. Write the questions and your answers on a lined piece of paper. Be mindful of the time you are given to read and answer the questions. Do not get caught by the bell.

Act Two, Scene i: 15 Minutes Read Scene i with your partner. When finished reading, answer these questions. There are multiple examples of Stage Directions in this scene. Provide one example from Scene i. Who is involved in this scene? What or who is being made fun of by Mercutio? Do the male characters pursue Romeo? Why or why not? Provide a one sentence summary of this scene. Act Two, Scene i: Answers 1. Possible Answers [Enter Romeo alone.] [Enter Benvolio with Mercutio, Romeo retires.] [Exit with others.] 2. Mercutio, Benvolio, and Romeo are all involved in this scene. 3. In this passage, Mercutio is making fun of Romeo, “Romeo! Humors! Madman! Passion! Lover! Appear thou in the likeness of a sigh;” (7-8). 4. The male characters do not pursue Romeo because they are tired and want to sleep in their own beds. Benvolio convinces Mercutio to leave Romeo alone. 5. After the Capulet feast, Romeo is followed and made fun of by Mercutio.

Act Two, Scene ii: 30 Minutes Read Scene ii with your partner. When finished, answer these questions. What is the location of this scene? What are the first 25 lines of this scene called? Who interrupts Romeo and Juliet’s discussion? What plans do Romeo and Juliet make? Do you think they will be able to follow through with their plan? Why or why not? 1. The setting of this scene is the Capulet’s orchard. 2. Romeo is speaking by himself with no characters to hear him. This means that the first twenty-five lines of this scene is a soliloquy. 3. Nurse continues to beckon for Juliet off-stage. 4. Romeo and Juliet plan to meet and get married the following day. 5. Varied Responses
