Human Rights

Human Rights Following WWII, the United Nations outlined the “Declaration of Human Rights” People who violate this declaration are considered enemies of the United Nations and can be persecuted by the ICC (International Criminal Court) Ex. Sexual slavery in Uganda Ex. Torture of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay Ex. Genocide in Darfur You will be reading parts of this declaration now

Part I: Brainstorm On your worksheet, brainstorm as many “human rights” as you can think of in two minutes. You must come up with at least five. Even if you’re unsure, don’t ask your partner! You’ll do that in a minute…for now, it’s just your thoughts. No right or wrong answer! What do you think every person on earth deserves??

Part II: Collaborate with Partner Now, share your rights with your partner. Write down your partner’s rights under section II of your worksheet. Highlight any rights that are the same. Talk about the ones that are different.

Part III: Sort your rights Sort your rights into three categories (one cannot be miscellaneous)- what do the rights in each grouping having in common? Make sure to fill in the names of your categories at the top of the column. We will share a few of your categories/rights with the class!

Part IV: The Real Declaration Read through the Declaration of Human Rights. When you find a right you and your partner had, highlight it in pink. It may not be worded exactly the same! When you find a right that surprises you, highlight it in green.

Part V: Answer the Questions What similarities did you see between the real list and yours? What differences? What rights that were included surprised you? Why or why not? Which rights that are guaranteed do you think are the most important? Why? Least important? Why? What areas do you think we still need to improve upon in order for everyone to truly have universal human rights? Explain your answer.
