Notes on Civil War Battle of Fort Sumter April 12, 1861 – Charleston SC Confederate victory No deaths, no prisoners Confederate State of America firmly established Jefferson Davis elected President of CSA Advantages of North and South North: more people and states (24), factories to make guns, etc., established foreign trade, more money South: just had to defend territory and knew the land, fighting for homes, better leadership Conscription Draft of men for war, could buy your way out “Rich man’s war, poor man’s battle” - resentment
