Smart Money Trends in Connected Vehicles Panel Multimodal Transportation TiECon Midwest 2016

AN INCREASINGLY MULTIMODAL WORLD Increasing Urban Density Global pop.: 7.4 billon today  9.3 billion 2050 (+26%) + Urbanization rate: 52% today  67% 2050 (+29%) = Urban pop.: 3.8 billion today  6.2 billion 2050 (+63%) Changing Consumer Behaviors 70% of millennials are multimodal  convenience / pay per use, etc. Smartphones change the experience  easy payments, access to real-time information / maps, maintaining a digital connection while moving, etc. Urban density makes traditional auto transportation less attractive  greater vehicle ownership costs More “mobility-as-a-service” models  Consumers becoming more utilitarian, more focused on freedom

BREAKTHROUGHS & REMAINING CHALLENGES Technology is Stepping in to Solve Individual Pain Points Multimodal mapping On-demand transit First-mile / last-mile TNC integrations for transit Bike sharing proliferation And many more… Challenges But Many Challenges Continue to Exist Agencies still playing “catch up” / not organized to be data & technology organizations Lack of technology standardization and interoperability And many more…

FIVE PREDICTIONS FOR FIVE YEARS FROM NOW… Public Transit Isn’t Going Away in Major Markets… Transit in some smaller dispersed cities may be replaced by TNCs (and potentially subsidized by the city), but will continue to exist in major cities However, Transit will Need to Evolve… More demand response More flexible routes driven by greater rider intel More Transportation Options for Specific Use Cases Event shuttles Commuting transportation Bikes / scooters / AVs / etc. Greater Degree of Interoperability Someone will develop an open platform capable of integrating and organizing the various transit technology vendors Multimodal Smart Ticketing… ??? The holy grail: journey planning meets multimodal smart ticketing (a universal ticket for all modes). Hopefully, some progress will be made on this front
