The Preamble The Preamble is the introduction/beginning of the U.S. Constitution Purpose - it states the main goals of the (new) government. Remember the Framers needed the citizens to approve it, so it had to be convincing.
The Preamble
1st Goal "...in order to form a more perfect union" Come together as one stronger country. Have common goals and work together as one nation States were too weak under Articles of Confederation
2nd Goal "...establish justice" Create a FAIR justice system Insure Due Process Everyone will be held accountable for their actions
3rd Goal "...insure domestic tranquility" Peace among the people in the country Peace inside our borders No government attacks on our own people
4th Goal "...Provide for the common defense" A military to protect us from outside attacks A nationwide defense system
5th Goal "... Promote the General Welfare" Make sure the nation as a whole is doing well. Make sure that we grow and prosper. Always do what is best for the country as a whole by providing opportunities.
6th Goal "...Secure the blessings of liberty, to ourselves and our Posterity" Your freedoms will be protected - land of the free Your rights will be secured. Rights like speech, religion, due process, etc. Posterity = future generations We will insure that all future generations will have freedoms and rights.
