Warm Up Mr. Samuels has $50. He buys 2 children’s tickets for the amusement park. Each ticket costs $14. He also buys a soda for $1 and a hamburger meal for $5. How much change will he receive?

Think and Write What do you do if you divide a plate of snacks equally between friends and there are a few left over?

Let’s look at the Envision Video for this lesson and take the quiz. Today’s Lesson In this lesson, you will learn that some division problems have a quotient with an amount left over that is called the remainder. Let’s look at the Envision Video for this lesson and take the quiz.

Dividing with Remainders What happens when you have 12 cookies and have to divide them equally between 5 people? How many are left over? A remainder is a number that is left over. In this problem, the answer would be that each person gets 2 cookies and there will be 2 left over. We would write this as: 12 ÷ 5 = 2 R 2. The R stands for remainder.

Dividing with Remainders, part 2 23 ÷ 3 To solve, first think: what is the closest multiple of 3 to 23? 3 x 7 = 21. The answer is 7. Now, subtract 23 – 21 to find the remainder. 23 – 21 = 2, so the answer is 7 R 2.

Making Equal Groups with Remainders Sometimes it helps to visualize remainders by drawing a picture. 14 ÷ 4- Make equal groups of 4. How many are left over?

Remainders Practice! You can use the cups or counters to illustrate the division problem. What is the quotient? What is the remainder? 18 ÷ 5 20 ÷ 3 15 ÷ 2 16 ÷ 3 19 ÷ 4 23 ÷ 7 24 ÷ 5

Problem 1 Mrs. Tyrell buys 18 plants. She wants to divide them into 5 equal rows in her garden. How many plants will be in each row? How many plants will she have left over?

Problem 2 Steve makes a plate of 48 miniature hot dogs for his party. He has 7 friends over. If each friend gets an equal amount of hot dogs, how many will each friend get? How many will be left over for Steve?

Problem 3 Coach Bobby orders 5 pizzas for his team. Each pizza has 8 slices. How many slices will there be in all? If there are 9 players on the team, how many slices will each player get? How many slices will be left over?

Lesson Wrap Up In this lesson, you learned that some division problems have a quotient with an amount left over which is called the remainder. Reflection in Notebook: I think dividing with remainders is easy/hear because ... Center Activity – Tic-Tac-Toe (9-4).
