In the Beginning Winston Churchill 1874-1965 Replaced Neville Chamberlain as prime minister on May 10 One of most notable leaders of the modern era Adolf Hitler Relied on aerial attacks on Britain without actual invasion Aerial attacks included the bombing of London—Sep. 7 through Nov. 2 1940 Heavy losses against German aircraft over Britain

Preparation After the fall of France, Britain developed the most thoroughly coordinated war economy; tanks, aircraft and machine guns National Service Act of 1941—men 18-50 and women 20-30 subjected to military or civilian war service/ 70% of the 3 million people added were women First battle fought completely in the air July-October 1940/ Battle of Britain

Operation Barbarossa British withstood the worst the Germans could bring; December 1940, Hitler ordered Operation B.; assault on the Soviet Union. Instead of a dead on attack, Germans used submarines to cut off shipping; which got rid of most of the British supplies.
