Agenda Bell Ringer Ch. 6 Recap Ch. 6 (Finish)

Bell Ringer Yesterday we learned that Jay Gatsby is really James Gatz. Gatsby is the fictitious alter ego crafted over the years by a young boy wanting to live out a fantasy life. So, other than crafting your own alternate persona, what celebrity, athlete, artist, etc. would you like to become? It can be anyone alive or dead.

Ch. 6 Recap We learn that Jay Gatsby is really James Gatz from North Dakota. He is the son of two unambitious, poor farmers. He spent years fantasizing and crafting the “Jay Gatsby” persona. One day he met a rich copper miner named Dan Cody on his yacht. Cody took him in, and sailed with him around the continent three times over a number of years. Cody died, and Gatsby went to college in Minnesota and worked as a janitor to pay his tuition. It has been several weeks since the events in chapter 5, and Nick hasn’t seen or talked to Gatsby since then. He’s been busy working in New York and spending time with Jordan. One day he decides to go over to Gatsby’s and Tom arrives shortly after on horseback with a couple. The woman invites Gatsby to dinner and when Gatsby went inside to get his things, Tom and the couple left. Gatsby throws another one of his large parties and this time Tom and Daisy show up. Nick comments on how the mood of this party was different, he used words like “oppressiveness” and “unpleasantness” to describe it. Although everyone else seemed to be having their usual good time. At one point Gatsby and Daisy go and sit on Nick’s porch for a half hour, alone. There are many celebrities at the party, and this is the first time Gatsby is seen enjoying himself (danced with Daisy)

Ch. 6 Pg. 113 We start in the middle of the second to last paragraph at the line: “It occurred to me that he had been very slowly…” http://esl-bits.net/Books/The_Great_Gatsby/Ch6-3/default.html When we finish: Complete your study guide questions Complete your vocab sheets Gatsby Quiz on Monday!
