How can urban living be made more sustainable? Geographical terminology Sustainable development Egan Wheel Quality of life Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Stick a copy of the Egan Wheel into your exercise books. To be sustainable, communities must: Make effective use of natural resources ƒ Enhance the environment Promote social cohesion and inclusion Strengthen economic prosperity. Stick a copy of the Egan Wheel into your exercise books. For each section of the wheel annotate to suggest why it is important for sustainability

CASE STUDY IN A DEVELOPING COUNTRY Urban Environments: How can urban living be made more sustainable? CASE STUDY IN A DEVELOPING COUNTRY Beddington Zero Energy Development (BedZED) Where is it? How does BedZED achieve sustainability? Energy efficiency: Water management and biodiversity Food, transport and waste Original design for BedZED homes What different groups of people were involved and how? Politicans (government) Peabody trust Bioregional Thames Water Residents Strengths Limitations

What actions have been taken at BedZED to be a more sustainable urban community? Watch the three videos and add summarised notes to your case study table Energy efficiency: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KcY26StEWCo Water management and biodiversity: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3UsfJZErc0g Food, transport and waste: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZx_lKMyQpI

Who were the different groups involved and how were they involved? There are many groups or stakeholders involved in urban development. They can be involved at different stages including the design, construction and maintenance of the development. They can include the residents or customers themselves. Others fall broadly into three categories: Public sector: groups that are controlled and funded by the state / government Private sector: groups run by individuals and companies, rather than the government. Most private sector organizations are run with the intention of making profit.  Charities: organisations set up to provide help and raise money for those in need.

Who were the different groups involved and how were they involved? Research each of the stakeholders on your case study table Who are they and what did they do? What role did they plan in managing the social, economic and environmental challenges of BedZED?

Now let’s go back to the Egan wheel How far does BedZED meet each of the criteria for sustainability?
