The Origins of Australia Mr Daly The Origins of Australia Saturday, 1 December 2018 Learning Objective: Identify and explore Australia’s origins Learning Outcome: To acknowledge the cultural and scientific origins of Australia Success Criteria: To be able to communicate different beliefs of how Australia was formed Activities Summary Worksheet Notes Creative Task

Geographical Origins of Australia Mr Daly Geographical Origins of Australia Saturday, 1 December 2018 Scientific / Geographical perspective Continental Drift The studying of the gradual movement and formation of continents. Plate Tectonics The studying of the movement, folding and faulting of the Earth’s crust http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WEDUtS0IMws

Geographical Origins of Australia Mr Daly Geographical Origins of Australia Saturday, 1 December 2018 An old, flat continent Australia has been described as old and flat. This is because the Australian continent has experienced a long period of geological stability, which means there has not been much volcanic or tectonic activity in the recent past. As a result, Australia has been open to the forces of weathering and erosion, which are processes that break apart and move rocks and soil around. In the distant past, however, there were volcanic eruptions and earthquakes that helped shape the face of Australia

Geographical Origins of Australia Mr Daly Geographical Origins of Australia Saturday, 1 December 2018 Aboriginal perspective The Dreaming The Aboriginal people made sense of the world through the stories of the Dreamtime, which were about a time referred to as the Dreaming. Each Aboriginal community had its own unique Dreamtime stories that had been nurtured and faithfully passed down to succeeding generations for thousands of years. Activity From the video, make your own Dreamtime story about how Australia was created. Draw it in a story board. You can copy the video.

The Rainbow Serpent Story Mr Daly The Dreamtime Creation Story Saturday, 1 December 2018 The Rainbow Serpent Story The Rainbow Serpent was the mother to us all She woke one day and as she travelled around the Earth She carved out the mountains and rivers She called out to all living creatures to populate the land She told the humans to be protectors of the land She told the tribes to pass this knowledge onto their children Anyone who breaks the laws will be taken by the Great Mother Serpent
