KS4EUHS Key Skills for European Union Hotel Staff

I run courses at Cambridge University Hello. My name is David David Sephton I come from England I live near Cambridge I run courses at Cambridge University

I am the director of a small company Primrose Publishing Ltd I create computer programs and smartphone apps for teaching and learning 50 languages

Our Project We are in a 2-year project funded by the European Commission There are 6 partners: Italy Croatia Slovenia Latvia Romania and Britain

We create special computer programs and smartphone apps The aim of the project is to help Hotel Staff to enhance their language skills and so improve the experience of guests from other countries We create special computer programs and smartphone apps

The new materials 4 computer programs 4 smartphone apps 3 digital maps for: - a village - a seaside town - a ski resort

They give 2 possible answers by the hotel staff. The 4 computer programs contain 700 questions asked by guests at the Reception desk and in the restaurant. They give 2 possible answers by the hotel staff. All the questions and answers are in 12 languages

The digital maps are for a Village, a Seaside town and a Ski Resort. They are interactive. The user clicks on a place on the map and it displays information. It can also have a link to a photo or a voice-recording.

Invisible “hotspots” Each map has a large number of invisible “hotspots” – electronic points. Each one opens a little window when the mouse slides over it or when you click on it. For the person creating them they can be made visible so that they can be accurately positioned. Here is what they look like.

This is what happens when the mouse slides over one of the hotspots.

Changing languages You can read the link-texts in any of the 12 languages. To change languages simply click on the blue link “Choose language” above the map. This presents a language bar. Click on the language that you want. The link-texts will then display in the language selected.

Help file Above the map there are the names of the three maps. You can click on them to switch between them. If you click on the cross it will open a short Help file. The text is still being finalized. To return to the map, click on the cross. It has now changed to an X.

Digital Maps - End of presentation - You will find the digital maps fun to use and a great way to improve your language skills
