Supportive Behaviours Learning Lite

Safety Behaviours In most everything we do, we find a behaviours to make the process easier and faster After we develop them, they become work habits in our everyday activities Developing everyday safety behaviours can keep you injury free through the year The 5 Principles of Behaviour Based Safety have been included in each of the following A learning lite is available for each – from Safety Central

Set Your Own Standards Choose to ignore negative examples If you fail to wear safety glasses because others don't, remember the blindness you may suffer will be yours alone to live with Step up and Lead by example

Operate Equipment Only if Qualified You are a competent specialist in your role Your supervisor may not realise you have never done a new or changed task before You have the responsibility to let your supervisor know, so the necessary training can be provided You can Walk Over and Lead by Example to help understanding

Respect Machinery If you put something in a machine's way, it will crush it, pinch it or cut it Make sure all guards are in place Never hurry beyond your ability to think and act safely Remember to de-energize the power first before placing your hands in a point of operation Understand that we all weigh Time vs. Risk and that we need to prioritise safety

Use Your Own Initiative for Safety Protection You are in the best position to see problems when they arise Ask for the personal protective equipment or additional guidance you need Look out for your team and help them use their initiative too Walk Over and Lead by Example to help yourself and others

Ask Questions If you are uncertain, ask Do not accept answers that contain, "I think, I assume, I guess." Be sure Walk Over and start those conversations that will achieve clarity

Use Care and Caution When Lifting Most muscle and spinal injuries are from overstrain Know your limits Do not attempt to exceed them The few minutes it takes to get help will prevent weeks of being off work and in pain Remember Time vs. Risk and choose to prioritise safety Ask for help from your team if you need it

Practice Good Housekeeping Disorganized work areas are the breeding grounds for accidents Pay attention to trip hazards You may not be the only victim Remember that some of your team will be in Alpha State for a few moments every 10 minutes or so and that they can miss things when they are in Alpha State

Wear Proper and Sensible Work Clothes Wear sturdy and appropriate footwear These should enclose the foot fully Remember to lace up your boots Avoid loose clothing, dangling jewellery, and be sure that long hair is tied back and cannot become entangled in the machinery or obscure your vision Building good Habits with wearing the correct clothing helps you be safer and means you Lead by Example for your team

Practice Good Personal Cleanliness Avoid touching eyes, face, and mouth with gloves or hands that are dirty Wash well and use barrier creams when necessary Wear your gloves Most industrial rashes are the result of poor hygiene practices Be aware of Time vs. Risk and how you can Lead by Example for your team

Be a Positive Part of the Safety Team Willingly accept and follow safety rules Encourage others to do so Your attitude can play a major role in the prevention of accidents and injuries Lead by Example and be aware of Habits in the workplace to help yourself and the rest of your team

What did we learn? There are many ways we can be supportive, these link with the 5 Principles of Behaviour Based Safety; Set Your Own Standards Operate Equipment Only if Qualified Respect Machinery Use Your Own Initiative for Safety Protection Ask Questions Use Care and Caution When Lifting Practice Good Housekeeping Wear Proper and Sensible Work Clothes Practice Good Personal Cleanliness Be a Positive Part of the Safety Team
