YOUR PLAN, YOUR FUTURE, OUR UNION 2023 ST GEORGE’S STUDENTS’ UNION – FIVE YEAR PLAN AND STRATEGY PROJECT YOUR PLAN, YOUR FUTURE, OUR UNION 2023

YOUR PLAN, YOUR FUTURE, OUR UNION 2023 Summary of work undertaken so far: In December 2017 the Students’ Union undertook some all student research to find out what you like about us, what you don’t like about us, and what you want from us now and in the future. A HUGE THANK YOU to everyone that participated in this research, either through completing the survey, or speaking with the market research team who undertook some on site in person research as well. Since then, your thoughts and opinions have formed the basis for the development of our new 5 year strategy, entitled YOUR PLAN, YOUR FUTURE, OUR UNION 2023

Summary of work undertaken so far (cont): The plan has now been written and we’re at the exciting stage of working with a brilliant graphic designer on the final product. This is not going to be a long, dull, written document, but will provide a visual and easy to understand summary of where St George’s Students’ Union is aiming to get to in five years. It will set the tone of investments into the Union, both in terms of space and support and provision to students, and will provide a basis for you, the student body, to hold your elected leaders to account if you feel they’re not progressing and developing your Students’ Union in the way you’ve told us you want them to. At the start of each year, the Sabbatical Officers will come up with an annual plan that will be shared with the student body detailing how they will work towards the 5 year goals during their term, and we hope that you’ll all see your Union improve year on year as a result.

Welcoming and Inclusive Supportive and Inspiring Strategic Themes Your feedback has resulted in the development of four strategic themes, and the strategy will lay out how St George’s Students’ Union plans to develop under these themes over the next five years. The themes are: Welcoming and Inclusive Supportive and Inspiring Democratic and Representative Reliable and Knowledgeable

Welcoming and Inclusive We want every single one of our members to feel welcome and enthused to take part in and contribute to any of the sports, social events, charitable causes, and cultural events that we, as your Students’ Union, run. We also want to make sure that every student feels welcome in any of our various spaces, and that our facilities provide what our students need. Therefore, over the next five years we pledge:   TO PROVIDE A WELCOMING AND INCLUSIVE STUDENTS’ UNION WITHIN ST GEORGE’S UNIVERSITY FOR ALL OF OUR MEMBERS

Supportive and Inspiring We know that all of our students work extremely hard whilst here at St George’s and that you achieve great things both academically and outside of your studies. We are very proud of our members, and want to make sure that every student knows that as your Students’ Union, we are here to support you in any way you may need – no matter how long you’ve been here, what your course is, or what your outside interests may be. Therefore, over the next five years we pledge:   TO SUPPORT OUR STUDENTS IN EXCELLING BOTH WITHIN AND OUTSIDE OF YOUR STUDIES

Democratic and Representative As your Student’s Union we are here to represent each and every student of St George’s University. To do this effectively we recognise the importance of good leadership in your Students’ Union – this means feeling able to challenge your elected leaders when needed, and having a clear and transparent constitution with democratic processes that are appropriate and fair. Therefore, over the next five years we pledge:   TO BE A DEMOCRATIC AND REPRESENTATIVE UNION, LED BY STUDENTS, FOR THE STUDENTS

Reliable and Knowledgeable As your Students’ Union, we represent the thoughts and opinions of our students at many forums across the University, and on a wider basis within the National Union of Students. This is a big responsibility and we realise that our members need to be kept updated in a timely manner on the matters we’re discussing in these meetings. We also want to ensure that you, our students, are aware of the many events and activities that are held throughout the year, both within, and outside of the Students’ Union, and realise that we need to develop and improve the methods through which we communicate information to you. Therefore, over the next five years we pledge:   TO BE A RELIABLE SOURCE OF ACCURATE, INFORMED AND VALUABLE INFORMATION FOR OUR STUDENTS

And now for the interesting part…

Our Graphic Designer has come up with two concepts for the look and feel of our strategy. Whichever we go with will be the start of St George’s Students’ Union developing a brand that will be recognisable throughout the University. As it is YOUR Students’ Union we felt that YOU should decide…
