Cell organelles Answers to Homework

cytoplasm Made up of fluid (water and nutrients that the cell needs) Suspends organelles Allows chemical reactions to take place in the cell Allows organelles to be moved around

Cell membrane Double layer membrane Semi-permeable membrane that controls the movement of materials into and out of the cell Encloses the contents of the cell

nucleus Large, circular shape Control centre of the cell Contains DNA that holds our genetic information

nucleolus Small dot inside the nucleus Special area inside the nucleus that produces ribosomes

nucleoplasm Fluid The fluid material inside the nucleus.

mitochondria Bean shaped with internal membranes Make energy for the cell (power plant or battery of cell) Convert energy in glucose into a usable form in a process called cellular respiration glucose + O2  CO2 + H2O + energy

Endoplasmic reticulum 3D network of branching tubes is connected to the cell membrane and extends throughout the cell transports materials such as proteins throughout the cell

Golgi bodies Appears as a stack of pancake-shaped membranes Collect and process materials that need to be removed from the cell makes and secretes mucus

vacuole Fluid-filled sac plant cells usually have one large one and animal cells usually have many small ones Contains many substances that the cell needs removes substances from the cell helps the cell maintain internal pressure

Cell wall Rigid, made out of cellulose Supports and protects the plant cell

chloroplast Green organelles Allows plants to make their own food from the sun using the process of photosynthesis CO2 + H2O + energy  glucose + O2

ribosomes Small dots on the endoplasmic reticulum Involved in the formation of proteins.

chromatin Thread-like strands The form of DNA that is contained in the nucleus

lysosomes Small fluid-filled sacs A vesicle filled with enzymes to breakdown food, digest waste, and worn out cell parts

Plant cell

Animal cell
