How to not be dumb on the internet

Protect your Privacy Using real names is for only certain websites (Facebook, for example) Using screennames/usernames is for many websites (and online gaming) Be careful what information you share online Ask a parent/guardian before sharing your address or full name online Know that sharing small details (type of school, mascot, sports you like, etc.) can lead others to know a lot about you Using a common username means accounts can be searchable together, linking your online identities What you do and share online can last FOREVER, even if you think it is deleted. Future employers can and WILL look at you what you have posted! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCH33TgK8Mw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zU8m-4_CmtU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xofQvL7EJZM&feature=relmfu

Pair and share What are some strategies for choosing and protecting an online password? Why is it a good idea for minors (people under age 18) to share passwords with parents? What websites do you use that ask you to use real names? What websites do you use that would be better for fake (screen) names?

Practice kindness Remember, everyone online that you talk TO and everyone you talk ABOUT is a real person with real feelings Because we are removed from the consequences of our actions (seeing someone’s pain that results from our words online), some people choose to act in a way online that they would not act in real life Cyberbullying: Using electronic means to harass, bully, intimidate, or commit crimes This can include stealing passwords, posing as someone else online, spreading rumors online (or with phones), making fun of others online (or with phones), or posting pictures of someone online that they wouldn’t want posted Cyberbullying is always wrong but it is also sometimes a crime You CAN get in trouble at school and with the police for what you say and do online!

Kindness: nonExamples Actual comments on a picture of a REAL PERSON from a website: On a 1-10 scale of beautiful women this one's a -5 at best. Since she's in front of the vision center, she should get her eyes checked since only a person with impaired vision would wear that outfit and that hairstyle... Someone, please kill it before it lays eggs! http://www.upworthy.com/since-when-does-being-popular-mean-having-to- put-up-with-this-kind-of-bullying Ask Ms. Sarah about someone that was unkind to her online!

Pair and share Have you seen people being unkind online? Did it seem like a big deal at the time? What is a good response to people being unkind online?

Keepin’ it clean The internet is full of fun things to do and lots of good information It also has things that are inappropriate and unsafe How should I respond if I find something that is inappropriate and unsafe? If a website asks me to confirm that I am 18 or older, I should close the page I should tell a parent if I think I’ve found something unsafe. This is better than getting in trouble later AND they can help me figure out ways to avoid these pages in the future. If a page has rude words or pictures, it isn’t helping me learn or have clean fun. It isn’t contributing to a healthy sense of humor. If I repeat these jokes at school, I’ll get in trouble. STAY AWAY. I can ask my parents to install ad-blocking extensions or filtering programs to keep my access to the internet safe. I’ll know I’m practicing habits that will help me in the workplace, since websites at work have to be clean, too!

What’s real? So much on the internet is fake, from fake pictures to fake news stories. If you see something that seems really extreme or too good/crazy/weird to be true, it just might be! Be cautious in replying to pictures or stories that seem extreme. They might have been posted to trick you and the poster might want to see your reaction. Do your research– Google a description of the picture/story and you can often find an explanation. Snopes.com is great for hard-to-believe news stories! Don’t just repost something without checking to see if it is true. You might be spreading something that is false without knowing it. SOME of these false stories include viruses or links to inappropriate pages. Example: Every few months, Mucaulay Culkin “dies,” according to the internet
