AQA A Level History Unit 1C: The Tudors: England, 1485–1603 Mary’s triumphant entry into London, 3rd August 1553 Mary I: problems of the succession

Recap: What does it mean? Is it Protestant or Catholic? 5 Recap: What does it mean? Is it Protestant or Catholic? Transubstantiation Bible and services in English Purgatory Plain/no clerical vestments Communion in both kinds

The aim of today’s lesson is to answer these questions: What support did Mary I have when she came to the throne? What challenges did she face?

How will this help you pass the exam? Sample essay question:   ‘The crisis faced by the Tudors in the years 1540-63 was primarily caused by economic factors.’ Assess the validity of this view. Rebellions questions draw on the same knowledge as MTC ones – both analyse nature of mid 16th c conflict. Note the timespan we have to consider for the MTC varies (generally means 1547-58, but 1539-63 for Jones and 1545-65 for Loades and different again for AQA)

The mid-Tudor crisis: key factors Factionalism Weakness of leadership and succession Religious upheaval Economic problems Foreign policy failures Rebellions

10 What was Mary’s agenda? In pairs or individually, complete the activity on p.4 of your handout. Extension activity On your timeline (pp.6-7), mark the Mid-Tudor crisis factors with different colours/symbols and number them in order of importance. Any achievements support revisionists’ positive view of Mary’s reign

Group work 20 Each group will work individually or in pairs to complete the tasks on their section of the gapped handout. Pairs will then compare their answers with the rest of their group to ensure they have all the relevant information. Choose a spokesperson for the group to feedback to the class. Everyone will complete their own handout. Extension activity Read Hutching’s article, noting any failures or achievements relating to each MTC factor.

Write a paragraph giving reasons for your answer. 5 Which of these the most significant problem for Mary at the start of her reign? factionalism leadership/authority succession religion money foreign policy opposition Write a paragraph giving reasons for your answer.
