DOMESTIC VIOLENCE DEFINITION Domestic violence is an intimate partner being threatened physically, sexually, psychologically, or the emotional abuse by the other partner. Definition from Center for Disease Control (CDC)

Intimate Partners Is defined as being same sex persons, a former spouse or common law spouse, a husband or wife, or dating boyfriend or girlfriend CDC

Types of Domestic Violence 1. Physical: Physical attacks, hitting, kicking, punching etc. 2. Sexual assault: Forced sexual acts performed or the forcing of performance of acts 3. Psychological assault: Name calling, verbal threats, intimidation, or isolation from family or friends 4. Violence against your property or pets: Breaking of treasured items, breaking items in the home, or the injury of a pet to promote fear Kent County community Coordinated Response Team (KCCCRT)

National Incidence of Domestic Violence 85% of all victims are females 15% of victims are males 2008, females 12-older 552,000 nonfatal domestic violence 2008, males 101,000 nonfatal domestic violence by intimate partners U.S. Department of Justice, 2006

Michigan Statistics In 2007 in Michigan there were, 101,388 domestic violence victims, 73,545 were female and 27,751 were male victims Michigan State Police Report

Kent County 17th Circuit Court In year 2008 there were 2,897 cases went to trial for domestic violence (accesskent.com) Grand Rapids Police Department received 5,451 calls to 911 related to domestic violence in 2005 only 2,483 cases went to trail (KCCRT)

Prevention plan by primary intervention Educate young children-Pre-K to elementary level on domestic violence. This can be done by school nurse. Educators in the school system provide teaching of signs and symptoms of different types of domestic violence Educate community through churches, hospitals, doctors’ offices, and other organizations

Educating the Public Posting brochures on the Community Bulletin Boards in the Grocery Stores to educate about the signs and symptoms of domestic violence and 24hour HELP- HOT-LINE for Ottawa County (1-800-848-5991) or 211 for National (1-800-799-7233) www.michigan.gov/domesticviolence

Ottawa County Hospitals Holland Hospital has 205 beds Zeeland Hospital has 57 beds Total 262 inpatient beds in Ottawa County Kent County total inpatient beds 2,366

Steps in implementing brochure project Present brochure to the hospital administration Present brochure to the hospital committee Educate the hospital nursing staff Contact hospital maintenance personnel for bracket placement in each patient’s room Utilize volunteers to place brochures in the brackets

Cost of production of brochures Office Depot one pamphlet cost $1.35 without any photograph for 300 brochures the total cost is $405.00 which is one brochure for each room with a few left over At Staples the cost of the brochure brackets is $4.49 each for 300 brackets the cost is $1,350.00
