Vocabulary Nutrition Food Label – a label found on the outside packages of food that states how many servings are in the container, how many calories are in each serving, and the amount of nutrients in each serving. Serving Size – is a standard amount of food that allows different foods to be compared with one another.

Label Logic Food labels tell you a lot about food. They do not suggest what food to eat – that is your own decision. But using food labels can help you make choices about the food you eat. What’s the point? Nutrition facts labels provide nutrition information in an easy-to-read format, but the label can be overwhelming with its abundance of information. Do not try to use all the information at once.

Label Logic Continued Instead, choose a target area (example: total fat) and make a choice based on that information. The nutrition fact label is meant to serve as a guide in order to help you make healthier food choices.

Food Label Review

Vocabulary Continued Portion – is the amount of food a person wants to eat. What you need and what you want can be very different things. Dietary Guidelines for Americans – a set of tips that help you practice good nutrition and form a healthy lifestyle.
